In recognition of February as African American History month, Art Sphere created a series of handouts celebrating some significant African American musicians with ties to Philadelphia. Our city has a particularly rich musical history, and this series represents only a small sampling of the vast array of performers and artists who pass through Philadelphia.
The musicians highlighted in our series are Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Marian Anderson, John Coltrane, and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. They come from musical traditions spanning many genres and styles, including gospel, blues, rock & roll, R&B, opera, jazz, and pop. Each is an innovator in their own right.
We are excited to honor their contributions to music and culture. You can learn more about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Marian Anderson, John Coltrane, and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson at these individualized blog post links.
