There are almost 20,000 species of butterflies, with 575 that you can find in the continental United States. Their wings are transparent and covered in thousands of miniature scales that make up the colors of their wings! Their lifespans are short and the colorful scales on their wings actually deter predators to keep the butterfly safe and maximize time for mating.
Butterflies have a liquid diet and use their feet to taste. They use their long tongues as straws to drink nectar from flowers.
