First released in 1978, this book with beautiful water-color illustrations, tells a story about a gentle young indigenous girl with a special gift for caring for horses that belong to her tribe. One day after a wild storm, the horses run away to a far away land with the girl on one of their backs. She is eventually faced with the decision as to whether she would like to live with the wild horses forever.
In 1979, the book received a Caldecott Medal for illustration. The Caldecott Medal was named after English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children to honor distinguished children’s picture books.
