Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service honors the memory of Dr. King by serving our community just as Dr. King spent his life serving others. Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service takes places on the third Monday of every January.

Millions of Americans serve on the Day of Service whether that be at schools, local shelters, or lending a hand to help our neighbors. Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service challenges Americans to take initiative and give back to their communities and volunteer to service in honor of Dr. King.

Together, we are able to accomplish what one of us alone could not do: paint over graffiti and restore ongoing murals; brighten benches, poles, and playground equipment; clean the surrounding park, hockey rink, and playground; create cards for soldiers; and most importantly, make Fishtown Rec Center a safer, brighter, and happier place to be.

Volunteer with Art Sphere Inc. and spend a rewarding day being creative, having fun, and making a difference.

Our mission and history…in line with MLK!:
We use art to honor neighborhoods by calling attention to their worthy aspects which makes clean-up fun and motivates community members to maintain these areas as special places.

One Art Sphere project at Fishtown Recreation Center and Playground has been an ongoing creative community collaboration since 2005.  We use this site each year in MLK’s Annual Day of Service.  You can join us as we continue to facilitate mural painting, stencil painting, origami and card making at our next community art event!

Located at:Fishtown Recreation Center, 1201 East Montgomery Avenue, Philadelphia, PA, 19125 (Site Directors: Ed Carpenter, and Joseph Scarpa, Contact Phone: 215-685-9885)

The Fishtown Recreation Center building can be accessed from either Montgomery or Palmer Streets. There is only street parking. Buses may find it easier to park south of Girard Street on Palmer or Montgomery. (Please do not bring valuables or leave valuables visible in cars.)

Project Suggestions From Previous Volunteers:
Wear layers and old clothes and shoes.  Extra clothes can be left on tables or stage inside. We work indoors and under awnings in poor weather conditions.
