Dancing is a great way to have a high energy and engaging class. Freeze dancing is always fun. Dance to the music, then freeze when the music stops. This encourages the students to listen carefully to the music, becoming aware of different patterns and rhythms in the song.
My students at Fishtown Recreation LOVE freeze dance. We like to pick different animals or dance styles to mimic. I also get the students involved in the music by playing percussion instruments along with me. I often pick the students with the best dance moves to come play with me first as initiative for the students to really get into the dancing, but I always make sure to let everyone have a turn to play.
