For High School Students

For College Students (going into Freshman or Sophomore year)

Scholarships, Grants, Fellowships and other programs funding both High School  and College Students:

  • Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship: ***Requirements***: For undergraduate students, citizen of the U.S, receiving a Federal Pell Grant, and are planning on applying to a credit-bearing study abroad or internship program, or a virtual international program.   • The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program: ***Requirements***: Be a U.S. citizen or national at the time of your application, Be enrolled in an accredited U.S. degree-granting program at the undergraduate (associate’s, bachelor’s) or graduate (master’s, doctoral, professional degree) level, You may only apply once, for one language program, each summer. Applicants who submit multiple applications will be considered ineligible. 
    • About this opportunity: An intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

    • What’s awarded: The CLS Program covers most of the costs of participating in its overseas institutes including International and domestic travel between the student’s U.S. home city and the CLS Program site, Visa application fees, language instruction, room, board, program-sponsored travel within the host country, all entrance fees for program activities, Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) language assessments, U.S. academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College. Check back here for updated deadlines!   • Boren Scholarships: ***Requirements***: Fund study abroad by U.S. undergraduate students in world regions critical to U.S. interests like Hebrew, Hindi, Kurdish, Cantonese, Tamil, etc. Email at boren@iie.org to get the next rolling application deadline for the Boren awards. Maximum awards are determined by duration abroad:

    • Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred) 

    • Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks 

    • Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

  • SYA Program Scholarships: ***Requirements***: For Highschool students, who demonstrate exceptional academic ability, commitment to their home school communities and passion for exploring other cultures, Must be enrolled in an SYA program.
