  • Awards: 1994 Literary Lambda Award, 1994 American Library Association Gay & Lesbian Book Award, Honorary doctorate from the Starr King School for the Ministry for transgender and social justice work

Leslie Feinberg was a lesbian, transgender activist, communist, and author. As a member of the communist Workers World Party, Feinberg took part in demonstrations and protests through her life. Her books focused on transgender theory and the stories of those in the queer community. Her 1993 book Stone Butch Blues and 1997 non-fiction book Transgender Warriors laid the groundwork for the terminology and awareness of gender studies and bringing them to mainstream audiences.
