How to prepare for college

College preparation is very important to conduct to avoid being overwhelmed once attending. All freshmen prior to starting their fall semester in college should focus on time management, financial responsibilities, on-campus educational resources (free tutoring, counseling), and living situations (roommates, leases, meal-plans).

Time management is a key strategy all incoming freshmen should become familiar with establishing. Outlining your school schedule, recognizing different tasks that will take place in your class, and becoming familiar with a map of your campus will help with organization. Organization goes a long way when attending college.

Financial preparation in college helps lessen the stress of figuring out how you will pay tuition. You should make sure payment strategies are financially cleared with your college before starting classes. Students should verify that all payments are covered with financial aid, scholarships, or payment arrangements.

Education preparation for incoming college students is very important. Students should figure out their strengths and weaknesses before classes start, to help understand what classes they might need to work more on. It is important to figure out a study strategy that can be used for classes like attending a local coffee shop to review notes with friends after class or joining in a study team in the library on weekends.

Figuring out a safe and stable living environment will be important, so you can focus on your studies. There are pros and cons to whether you live on campus or commute. Things to consider include parking, public transportation, safety at night, night classes, job, opportunities to make friends, food preparation, and college community life.

Finally, before starting classes, you should research all resources your university offers to students. Resources on campus can work in students’ favor and help transition high school students into college.
