Small but mighty, the mussel is a crucial member of our local waterways. Adult mussels live partially buried in riverbed sand. Since they are filter feeders, they pull water in and filter out food particles, often filtering out other things as well. Many scientists believe these little eaters make a big difference in water clarity and quality. 70% of the world’s freshwater mussel populations are at risk, however, due to erosion and sedimentation.
