The U.S. Constitution

The Constitution of the United States of America is one of the most important documents in the country’s history. It outlines the rules, the rules for making rules, and the protected rights and freedoms every US citizen gets. The document itself is made up of seven articles, a Bill of Rights, and Amendments. The seven articles are like chapters with specific instructions for the Government. The Bill of Rights is a list of protected rights for each citizen, things people are guaranteed by the government and their stipulations.

The amendments are changes to the constitution made after the original document was approved. Making an amendment requires a very long and careful process outlined in the articles.  Some of the most well-known amendments include the 1st amendment which outlines the rights to freedom of speech, assembly, petition, religion and expression and the 13th amendment, which called for the emancipation of enslaved people.
