We traveled under the sea during our Lunchtime Literacy Through Art and Music class at the Fishtown Community Library. After reading some ocean themed children’s books together our group made their own ocean scenes. Parents and guardians helped the kids glue paper silhouettes of fish, whales and octopuses to blue paper. The kids then used crayons and paint sticks to decorate their pictures.
Below are photos of one of the participant’s mom helping him to decorate his drawing by looking at the book we read together. She’s pointing out the different patterns on the illustrated fish and then guides him in drawing those patterns. Learning becomes so meaningful to children when they are doing it with the adult’s in their lives. When families learn and create together their bond is strengthened.
