Lesson #4 Finish What You Start

Your Destination: One of the best ways to set yourself up for success is to finish whatever you start.  Remember the bigger the goal the more time it may take.  Do not get discouraged if you come across an obstacle; it takes you one step closer to your goal.

Travel Kit: See How to Visualize Your Project in a Timeline handout.

Finishing your project sets you up for success; it will become a habit. Make a schedule.

On the Path: Avoid distractions; if you know something is distracting you from finishing your task, don’t put yourself in a situation where you can’t say no.

Step 1: Start with small tasks. Breaking down a larger task into smaller steps will help you complete the task.

Step 2: For example, Charles Darwin spent 22 years completing his work. Have you ever heard of the “Theory of Evolution’?’ This is when a person, animal or plant adapts to their environment based on their needs in the environment. Charles Darwin spent many years living in the woods observing animals and birds. Dedication is necessary to reaching your goals.

Step 3: Make sure you are ready and prepared. Make a list of all the things you need to reach your goal.

Here are some tips to be successful in finishing your task.

When taking on a new task or goal:

  • Organize your thoughts or materials. Figure out what needs to be done immediately and what can be done later
  • Complete it in small parts
  • Get training if needed
  • Accept that there will be some things you cannot do by yourself – It is not a sign of weakness to ask for help

Learn new vocabulary: Accomplish – achieve or complete successfully.
