How to Create a Podcast or Create a Video

When creating both videos and podcasts the first thing every person will need is the equipment. The biggest reason people won’t record is because they think their equipment isn’t good enough, but you don’t need fancy equipment at all! Most people have phones in this day and age, so you can use that for recording, and if your phone is new, the audio it records also works. However, if you do have a separate mic, laptop/PC, and camera you can create quality videos and recordings. You might want to check out some of the software mentioned below.  

Creating a podcast may seem a bit complicated at first, but it isn’t as hard as it may seem. The first thing you should start looking into is finding a “hosting platform.” Hosting platforms are just platforms that give you a space where you can upload your podcast. However, they are not free and some may be harder to use than others. This step requires a bit more research when you are ready to create a podcast. Examples of some of the best podcast hosting platforms are: Buzzsprout, Captivate, Transistor, Castos and Podbean. A free option is YouTube.  

Now it is time to create your podcast. Things you will need are a name, artwork and a topic. Things you may want to think about are the format and length of each episode. Take your time here and make sure you have a good foundation before going on. Ask yourself these questions: “Is it going to be just me; if not, who should I ask to join? What am I going to talk about and to whom?” Once you have answered these questions it’s time to record. If you are using a phone, just record it horizontally, if you want to put the recording on YouTube, and make sure to speak clearly. If you are using other equipment like a mic and camera you will need other software, to make sure everything is aligned correctly. OBS studios is free and easy to use. Once you have set OBS, click the record button and record your episode, making sure to save this somewhere you can easily get to, such as your desktop.  

Once you have your episode recorded and saved you will have two options, to edit or not to edit. For example, let’s say if you wanted a 20-minute episode, but recorded an hour of footage, you would need to cut it down. If you are using a computer, there are free options such as Lightworks and HitFilm Express. If you are using your mobile device, your device should have a built-in editing software; or example iPhones have iMovie. Editing can be hard but once you get the hang of it, future episodes for your podcast will become easier to make. After editing your video, it’s time to upload your episode. Hosting platforms are used for this. If you only want to have a podcast with audio, follow the directions of the platform you choose, and just like magic your episode will be uploaded. However, if you want to upload both audio and video, you need to use YouTube.
