Postcard Project

Level: Elementary and Middle School

Duration: One 45-minute class period

Historical Overview: Examples of postcards from vacations

Goals and Objectives: To introduce the students to art for the new school year with little pressure. This project is important for reflecting on the students’ summer and combines both writing and drawing skills.

Vocabulary: Address, stamp, message, illustration, dividing line

Materials: Colored pencil, postcard size pre-cut paper, markers

Procedures:

Day 1

  1. Share postcards collected from the summer’s vacations.
  2. Show students the poster illustrating directions.
  3. Have students draw a picture of something they did this summer.
  4. Color.
  5. On the other side write message to a friend and a made-up address including a zip code.
  6. Draw stamp.
