Duck Stamps

Students joined a long history of wildlife artists in designing their own “Federal Duck Stamp”. The class looked at past Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest winners for inspiration. We discussed the exterior anatomy of birds. Students noted the variety in colors and patterns in different waterfowl.

Drawing is an excellent way to study the natural world. Students drew from Bird Field Guides and other visual resources to create their ducks. They developed an acute understanding of a duck’s form by taking the time to look and draw one.

Even though students were working from the field guide books they still added their own personal details. Note the Mallard wearing a fedora.

Students liked this page especially because of the challenge of drawing a bird in flight.

These students did a great job designing their duck on the ‘stamp’. The colors are delightful as well.
