Polar bears are the largest bears in the world and are at the top of the food chain in the Arctic. Polar bears spend most of their time in the sea and nearby floating ice, which is rapidly melting due to climate change. Because of this habitat loss, they are being forced to live closer to human populations.
Out of 19 subpopulations spread throughout the Arctic, four have experienced declines in numbers, eight have insufficient data, five are stable, and two have increasing numbers.
