Free Lesson Plan: Personal Hieroglyphic Prints

Duration: One 45-minute class period

Goals and Objectives: To introduce printmaking and carve and print hieroglyphic stamps

Vocabulary: Hieroglyphics, cartouche, papyrus

Materials: Safety cut carving blocks, linoleum knives, papyrus, wood dowels, ink brayers, stamps, pads, alphabet charts, block printing press, tape

Procedures:

Day 1

  1. Anticipatory Set: Show examples of Egyptian tomb paintings from Cleopatra and King Tut.
  2. Have students write their names in hieroglyphs using hieroglyphic charts.
  3. Cut out linoleum with the Egyptian alphabet to make cartouche.
