Indigenous Coil Pots Craft Handout

Coil pots were common among the Southwestern Indigenous Tribes. Most of the oldest coil pots that have been recovered were made by three different pre-Columbian tribes/cultures – the Anasazi (ancestors to the Pueblo people), the Mogollon, and the Hohokam.

Materials: Modeling Magic/Polymer Clay/Modeling Clay, tools to roll and cut the clay, foil.

*Note: you can choose any sort of clay you want and make the pot any size you, but only certain types of clay can be baked. Check the package for more information.

Instructions:

1. Knead the clay and get it warmed up to work with.

2. Roll a large piece of clay (about 1×3 inches) into a ball and flatten it to make the base of the pot. Set aside.

3. Knead and roll a large piece of clay horizontally to begin making the coils. Roll it out until there is a long strand of clay.

4. Wrap the long strand of clay around the base in layers. Use your fingers to gently press together the separate layers. Use your fingers to gently press together the separate layers. If you are using polymer clay,  you can bake your pot for 15 minutes at 275 degrees Fahrenheit.
