Brer Rabbit Earns a Dollar-A-Minute

Lesson: Earning Money: Adults must earn money to provide for their needs and wants. In this lesson, we can learn that money is earned and does not come free. Learning how to earn small amounts of money creates a foundation of understanding that work and money are connected.

Your Destination: Students should recognize that money is earned from doing work. Simple ways to earn money as a student include: doing chores and getting paid allowance, mowing the lawn for neighbors, making crafts and selling them, lemonade/bake stands. Brainstorm ways you could make money. In this project, you will be making a bracelet. Bracelets are an easy craft to make and a simple way to earn money for yourself.

Travel Kit: Yarn, scissors, handout, cardboard

On the Path

Step 1: Go through the handout linked below to understand the concept of earning money

Step 2: Take the yarn and cut two strings about forty inches long each. Wrap it around your wrist to make sure it’s the correct length, add 2 more inches, and then fold the strings in half

Step 3: Tie a knot at the folded end, leaving a small loop.

Step 4: The loop and the shorter strings need to be held down while you braid. Cut a slit at the top and bottom of your cardboard. Slip the loops in one side and the short strings in the other. Now slip the ends of the short strings into the bottom slit.

Step 5: Start the bracelet by tying a knot with the long strings around the 2 in the cardboard.

Step 6: To make a twisted know design continue tying knots starting on the same side. To make a straight box design, tie the knots opposite each other each time. Continue the knots down until you have the length you want.

Step 7: Tie a final knot with all four strings at the end. This knot will slip into the loop you made at the other end. You can tie more knots at the end to make sure it won’t slip out of the loop

Learn New Vocabulary: Allowance, chores, earn,

Discussion Questions: How much would Brer Bear make if he had hung there for 10 minutes? What about 1 hour (60 min in an hour)? What is something you want that you need to earn money?
