Urinary Bladder

Waste Storage

Function:

This triangle-shaped, hollow organ is located in the lower abdomen. The bladder’s walls relax and expand to store urine, as well as contract and flatten to empty urine through the urethra. The typical healthy adult bladder can store up to two cups of urine for two to five hours!

Fun Fact:

The bladder can stretch to hold up to two cups of urine. Once you’re ready, muscles in the bladder wall squeeze and muscles at the outlet relax allowing urine to flow.
