Function:
The pharynx in your throat is a ring-like muscular tube that acts as the passageway for air, food and liquid. It is located behind the nose and mouth. The pharynx also connects the mouth and nose to the breathing passages and the esophagus. The throat also helps in forming speech.

It is an organ which is found in both vertebrates and non-vertebrates. However, the structure may vary from species to species.
