Esophagus

Highway To The Stomach

Function:

The esophagus is a muscular tube connecting the pharynx with the stomach. Your esophagus runs behind the windpipe (trachea) and heart, and in front of the spine. Just before entering the stomach, the esophagus passes through the diaphragm.

Fun Fact:

The muscles in your esophagus act like a giant wave. That is what moves food or drinks down to your stomach. This wave action is called peristalsis.
