While we don’t want to misrepresent the current mascot of Bartram MS and HS, we are substituting the eagle in its place for our art classes, as our purpose for using the mascot theme is to teach about animals. Our policy is to be respectful of all people. We believe many people including Indigenous People may find the Bartram mascot offensive. We also believe that this may be a valuable opportunity to start important conversations, as well as learn about the people who lived in PA before this very historic school was built. Prior to the first waves of colonization, the major Pennsylvania Indian tribes were the Lenape, Susquehannock, Shawnee, and Iroquois. The original people of what would become the city of Philadelphia were the Lenape. To learn more about the Indigenous People of PA please visit: Indigenous Peoples of PA  and What Is Settler Colonialism?
