  • Born: October 16, 1854
  • Died: November 30, 1900
  • From: Dublin Ireland
  • Pronouns: He/him
  • Contribution/Impact: He wrote The Picture of Dorian Gray, Lady Windermere’s Fan, and The Importance of Being Earnest. A spokesperson for the Aesthetic movement in 19th century England, advocated for art, celebrated criminal suits involving homosexuality in which he ended up imprisoned.
  • Occupation: Poet, Dramatist
  • Known For: The Importance of Being Earnest (1895), The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890)
  • Awards: Greatest successes were his society comedies. His comedy writing was new in English theatre, and in the Important of Being Earnest he used his writing to expose Victorian hypocrisies. Won the Retro Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Performance with The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Canterville Ghost.
  • Interesting Facts: His father was a top ear and eye surgeon, and his mother was a revolutionary poet (under the pen name Speranza) and knew a great deal about Celtic folklore.

Oscar Wilde was an Ireland born writer who was known for his plays critiquing society as well as his imprisonment for accused homosexual acts. He studied at Oxford, and his works led the way for more modern works. His only novel is A Picture of Dorian Gray, as well as his most famous dramatical work, The Importance of Being Earnest.
