As a brown trans disabled artist Kay Ulanday Barrett faced many struggles growing up in Chicago, with one such example being youth homelessness. Fortunately, Barret found a community amongst poets and performance artists in the area. Later on in life, they attended DePaul University and studied Women’s and Gender Studies as well as Political Science. Barrett has published several books about his life experiences and continues to advocate for minority groups.
