Why the Sky is Far Away

Lesson: Money Responsibility: Successful management includes keeping a record of spending, knowing how much money is available, and how much money you need to save for future needs. Spending more than you have can be wasteful and also leads to debt. Staying out of debt is easier if you have a budget plan and learn how to manage your money responsibly.

Your Destination:

Travel Kit: Budgeting handout, small candies (m&ms, skittles, jellybeans), pencil

On the Path

Step 1: Hand out the candy to each student. This could be the same amount or different amounts for each child.

Step 2: Each piece of candy can represent $1.00. Each item or activity on the sheet costs a certain amount. Think about what you want to spend your money on.

Step 3: Place the amount of candy needed for each activity or thing on the page.

Step 4: How much did you spend? Was there anything left that you saved? Were you not able to buy something because you used up all the candy?

Step 5: Go through the scenarios in the second link. Discuss what each student would do and if they have had a similar situation.

Learn New Vocabulary: Debt, Gazing, Wasteful, Sow, Budget

Discussion Questions: Why is it important not to take, eat, or spend more than you should? What was the consequence of taking too much from the sky? Who did this affect? What are some areas you can practice not being wasteful?
