Drawing Texture

Teaching art has helped me live a life that requires me to notice beauty. I had just finished teaching a lesson on “Drawing Textures,” when I took a walk and captured everything I had taught in this single photo. The softness of feathers versus the hard edge of rocks and the intricate pattern of tree flowers. Where the textures meet is particularly pleasing—a little gift from nature.

Art Assignment: Use a pencil and white paper. Trace your hand. For each drawn finger, choose a different texture to fill it. How would each finger relate to the world differently from the one you have? Would it have magical or supernatural powers? What could it do? Could it be a special computerized glove?

How often we forget to admire the small stuff…
