Collection Jars

Objective: To have students showcase what they value through developing collaging skills and remembering acceptance.

Prep:

Have enough white computer pages with a jar drawn on them. Also bring in different pages from magazines and catalogs that have things the children in their age group would likely value. Make sure the magazine pages that are brought in have appropriate content on both sides.

Create an example Jar by collaging an example of what you value. Have a mix of pictures found in magazines and drawings.

Materials

  1. Pages from Magazines, enough for the students to share.
  2. White Pages with a Jar drawn on them
  3. Scissors
  4. Glue
  5. Pencils
  6. Colored Pencils and Crayons

Steps:

  1. Introduce the idea of values. What do you value? What do you enjoy? Bring up the idea that a person’s values is what makes them unique
  2. Show the example of your collection jar. Discuss each thing you placed in it and why.
  3. Hand out The white pages with the Jar on them, pencils, colored pencils, crayons, the magazine pages, scissors and glue.
  4. Give students time to complete their jars and fill them with things they treasure and value.
  5. At the end of class have the students hold up their Jars. Point out how no two jars look the same, but that they are all still special and vibrant.
  6. Allow time for any student who wants to share what is in their Jar. Have the other students be respectful by paying attention and applauding what this person values.
