Honoring History Through Art, Literacy, and Civic Pride
June 14th is Flag Day, a time to honor the adoption of the U.S. flag in 1777 and reflect on its meaning throughout American history. This year, as Pennsylvania celebrates its 250th anniversary, Art Sphere Inc. invites you to explore the rich legacy of the American flag and Philadelphia’s key role in its creation through free, creative lesson materials! Why We Celebrate Flag Day- June 14, 1777: The Second Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official U.S. flag.
- Philadelphia is believed to be where Betsy Ross sewed the first flag.
- Flag Day was first celebrated in schools in the late 1800s and officially recognized by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916.
- Pennsylvania is the only state to observe Flag Day as a state holiday!
