Beautiful Looms

Students weaved some beautiful pieces using very simple materials. Just yarn, cardboard and scissors. Students learned that weaving is an important form of textile production. The invention of looms dates back thousands of years ago. They have been found on major continents like Asia, Africa and Europe. We discussed that looms were operated by hand until they could be mechanized during the Industrial Revolution.

The class was less than an hour, but they were able to make a great deal of progress. Fortunately students still wanted to work on their looms outside of school. They were sent back with a long piece of yarn so they could continue to add to their looms.

Students took their time trying to make every row neat and even.

Some students were familiar with weaving on a loom. It was exciting to learn their approach to weaving.
